My company has allowed me to work part-time for 10 years, given me a year's termination notice, and are providing excellent outplacement services, so I really can't complain. In fact, in a way it's exciting -- I'm lookng at it as another chance to decide what I want to be when I grow up.
There's no way I will land another part-time position with the benefits of this one. I have wanted to stay home for a while, and we will definitely give that a try. I suspect, though, that I may want to bring in a little extra income, to pay for vacations, lessons, etc.
I've considered teaching math/science/technology at a middle or high school. I know it would be challenging, and likely equally rewarding. As a girl at that age, I felt discouraged in math and science, and I'd like to encourage girls instead. However, teaching would be an even bigger time committment than my current job. So while I'd like to consider it later, after the girls leave home, right now I want as much time with them as possible.
I'm also considering designing scrapbook page templates for Heritage Makers, an easy-to-use digital photobook company for people who want to preserve their memories, but don't want to scrapbook. I wouldn't even have to sell the pages myself, but would get a royalty each time my template is used. I am going to submit as many pages as I can, and see where it goes from there.
Right now I'm keeping an open mind and considering everything. I'm even open to suggestions!
And because I think a blog post without a picture is boring, here is a scrapbook page (part of our family calendar this year):
